GB-CHC-285776-BAN098CAFODThis project seeks to provide co-financing to Action on Disability & Development's European Council (EC)-funded programme to promote the rights of people with disabilities and help ensure their participation in elections in Bangladesh. It builds on Action on Disability & Development's experience in mobilising voters, monitoring election work and supporting the actions of disabled people's organisations (DPOs) in ensuring the accountability of duty bearers. The project will target 13,473 people with disabilities and 1 million voters with and without disabilities in 41 upazilas of nine districts in Bangladesh over 2 years. Specifically, it will aim to: - empower citizens with disabilities and strengthen capacity of DPOs - promote obligation of Bangladesh to rights of people with disabilities; - improve awareness of PWDs for participation in the 10th Parliament Election; - facilitate dialogue among political parties and other stakeholders to enhance political representation of people with disabilities. To begin with a Trainer Team was set up within Caritas to carry out regional and field level training among Caritas staff and other key personnel. Suitable educational material was selected and translated into Bangla as a resource for people needing both to obtain factual data, and to explore the ethical and theological issues. Through a pilot project in Satkhira Sub-District, Khulna District, a successful model was developed for disseminating HIV-awareness quickly and effectively to large numbers of adolescents through the training of peer educators – young volunteers who will then pass on what they learn to their friends, and also be ready to provide support. Caritas is presently replicating this model and rolling it out to Dhaka and Chittagong. Spiritual counselling is also provided to people living with HIV/ AIDS, and for their families. Thankfully the HIV prevalence rate in the country has remained consistently very low. Caritas works primarily with marginalised landless farmers (“landless” being a technical term which includes those who own small amounts of land, insufficient of themselves to support a family). Training is provided in farming methods which can increase production and which are also environmentally sustainable. For example, communities are introduced to drought-resistant plant varieties, composting and water conservation techniques, crop diversification and integrated crop management, and ways to enhance soil fertility. Families are also helped to make the most of the food available through better knowledge of nutrition and the importance of eating vegetables. The project also seeks to raise rural incomes. Communities are helped to address the problems arising from climate change, and to be prepared and have contingency plans in place in the event of natural disaster (drought, flooding etc). It works by establishing ganokendras (GK), a kind of community-based organisation which links up grassroots-level communities with Community Resource Centres (CRCs) established at union level. (A union, meaning a group of villages, is the lowest tier of local government in Bangladesh.) The GKs and CRCs promote basic literacy and help people to be aware of, and to access, government services to which they are entitled: these include health and education services, support with livelihoods development, and social security for the most vulnerable. The project also provides skills training and microcredit to help people earn a better income, and vocational training for young people which includes use of computers and the internet. Communities are mobilised to analyse the risks they face from natural disasters (which are very common in Bangladesh) and to improve their capacity to cope with emergencies as they arise. Over the past two years, ITN-BUET has contributed technical advice and training on the following: development and testing of low cost solar panels, training on the assembly and function of solar panels, development and testing of solar-based water purification systems, secondary data collection of salinity level, provision of user specific information relating to the location of the mobile phone owner and the mapping of cyclone shelters in the coastal zones. With this grant, CAFOD is supporting costs of two full-time Research Associates, to further develop the pilot model low cost solar panels and rain water harvesters with solar-based water purification systems. ITN-BUET will collaborate with Caritas Bangladesh, ADD and DAM in working with grassroots community in selection of beneficiaries and training of beneficiaries and partner field staff, etc. ITN-BUET will link national level research with field level experimentation through its research and technology capacity. The manuals and published materials produced in the last 12 months will be provided to the beneficiaries. Heavy rains triggered by the cyclone raised river levels and burst mud embankments, flooding homes. Bagerhat was one of the worst-affected districts, with houses, livestock, crops, and infrastructure more extensively damaged even than after Cyclone Sidr in 2007, despite Sidr having done far more damage in overall terms. Over a year later many people were still struggling to recover from the impact, and people with disabilities living in the affected areas were particularly hard hit, some being forced to resort to begging to survive. This project began in August 2010 to support the livelihood and other basic needs of 150 disabled people and their families. Subsequently two smaller annual grants were made to support the completion of a three-year workplan 2011-14 under which the recommendations of the Gender Audit were to be implemented and bedded in; Caritas Bangladesh's policies, codes and guidelines improved; relevant training (e.g. on Gender Sensitivity, Grievance Handling, Women Leadership Development) rolled out to all Caritas staff, and also to others parts of the Catholic Church in Bangladesh and other NGOs; and networking undertaken with relevant actors at local, national and international level to promote gender equality. Seasonal flooding is normal in Bangladesh, and can actually be beneficial (the floods deposit sediment on the fields which enhances their fertility). But excessive flooding not only causes widespread damage but requires people to evacuate their homes to live in makeshift camps without proper sanitary facilities, and until the floods recede they may be unable to pursue their normal livelihoods. Caritas Bangladesh undertook to extend emergency assistance to Satkhira District, in Khulna Division which was one of the worst-affected areas. The activities include construction of latrines and training on hygiene practices, support for building temporary shelters as needed (labour and/ or materials), food rations, and cash-for-work for 10-15 days to enable one member from up to 2,000 households to earn a wage from working on essential infrastructural repairs (cleaning up damaged houses and latrines, and repairing roads). Loca schools and buildings are used as shelters and rescue operations is led by the army since 26 June. As of 4 July, a total of 122 people died (Chittagong 35, Bandarban 37, Cox’s Bazar 47 and Sylhet 3) due to landslides, broken of walls and drowning. Caritas was part of the UN OCHA led assessment. Following needs assessment, at the request of the affected community and local government, Caritas has planned to undertake Emergency Relief and Early Recovery response for the affected families in three districts. Caritas Bangladesh made an emegency appeal (EA 25/2012) through CI on 9/7/12. The total budget proposed is Euro 1,151,974.The program includes direct food and cash distribution for 9,536 families, cash for works for 8,744 families and house repair for 2,331 families in Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet districts. This programme will be implemented from 5 July to 31 October 2012. In Bangladesh, sanitation and hygiene facilities for disabled people have not been fully addressed, which has severe consequences for the health, dignity, education and employment of disabled people and their caregivers. ADD aims to reach disabled people in Faridpur and Bagerhat districts, they will receive house hold (HH) based sanitation facilities, community based facilities and community awareness raising and self-help group (SHG) meetings. Further 8,000 people will be reached indirectly: family members of the direct project participants, local government authorities, school teachers and students, N/GOs working on WATSAN intervention and through watsan networks. The project intervention also includes awareness raising of the disabled person’s right to sanitation and advocacy to implement the national law on inclusive sanitation and hygiene as a right for all existing SHGs at grassroots level. CAFOD partner Bangladesh University for Engineering and Technology (ITN-BUET) will provide technical support to ADD for developing disable friendly sanitation equipment and will provide community latrines to disabled people. Disabled friendly WASH facilities and equipment include varying sizes of seated commode with pan, commode with hand/leg stands and body supports, hand supports, bed latrine, rails and ramps. Two CAFOD partners, Caritas Bangladesh and ADD will explore alternative options for managing water resources that will support the needs of people living with disabilities in the current EC-CAFOD funded multi-partner DRR livelihoods programme. Together with community members Caritas Bangladesh will re-excavate large and small ponds, re-establish large water bodies and provide household rain water harvesting systems. The establishment of a water management committee and awareness raising sessions on WASH, operation and maintenance of the system will aid in ensuring that these water resources are managed and maintained by the target communities. CAFOD and Caritas Bangladesh will collaborate with Caritas Switzerland in using WASA method, a chlorination process to purify the pond water. In order for CAFOD and our partners to address future urban risk it is vital that we undertake a needs assessment which is interlinked with urban DRR capacity building workshop. This proposed pilot scoping study will identify and document various existing coping strategies and adaptive practices of urban households in Bangladesh. Millions of coastal people are vulnerable to the inundation of water, especially vulnerable are the livelihoods of the Sundarbans forest dependant people. CCEC aims to reach 1,900 people (940 men and 960 women) from 380 vulnerable Sundarbans resource harvester families (those who collect resources from the Sundarbans forest such as honey or palms) across Mongla Upazila under Bagerhat District and Dacope Upazila under Khulna District. 200 Sundarbans resources harvesters (including crab, fish, Nypa - a palm tree collected for thatching and honey collectors) will form eight livelihood groups and two Upazila associations. These groups will receive livelihood specific inputs and training on topics including Disaster Risk Reduction and climate change adaptation. 200 Sundarbans resource harvester's wives and 20 tiger widows (women whose husbands were killed by tigers) will also receive training on agricultural, fisheries, and livestock in the context of climate adaptive livelihoods. 20 tiger widows will receive handicraft training and the project will establish a link with the Bangladesh Tourism Corporation to promote the sale of their products. In coordination with Bangladesh Legal Aid Services Trust (BLAST), the project will provide legal aid to 100 project participant families who face discrimination in accessing resources. The emergency relief will provide the 1,000 families with supplementary food for up to 15 days, cash support for essential household items and Cash for Work for ongoing support to 500 people whose livelihoods have been disrupted. A number of factors i.e. a) high population density; b) high levels of arsenic in the groundwater; and c) high microbial contamination levels in the surface water, work as impediments to safe water supply. Saline water intrusion; drainage congestion; extreme events; and changes in coastal morphology have been identified as primary physical effects for the vulnerabilities in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. To overcome the situation, CAFOD and Caritas Switzerland have supported Caritas Bangladesh in the implementation of WASH projects in the south of Bangladesh. CAFOD have supported work through DfID Match Fund 1 (BAN157 and BAN158) and Caritas Switzerland have supported a project with the overall objective of the project to 'provide access to safe drinking water for 4,000 disadvantaged families'. This project introduced chlorination technology for water purification through the training of 19 experts. These projects have been running parallel and have both been implemented by Caritas Bangladesh. The mid-term review for Match Fund 1 (see BAN157) revealed some positive findings in relation to the chlorination/water purification technology introduced by the project, which suggests potential scope to scale-up this intervention in the future. The project will be implemented over 2 years (April 2015 - March 2017). The project will form DPOs and SHGs in remote locations where PWDs are often extremely marginalised and excluded from development initiatives. The groups will provide platforms for PWD to negotiate access to services (health/sanitation, inclusion in social safety nets etc.) and mobilise resources for creating livelihood and income opportunities. Ten bee-keeping groups will be formed, which will provide a platform for the participants to discuss learning, receive training and support each other. Small holder farmers groups will also be formed to train and disseminate techniques on multi-cropping and promote crops which benefit from bee pollination. 50 people will be supported as honey sellers and provide links between the producers and market. The project will be implemented in Dinajpur in northern Bangladesh where the climate and topography is suitable for beekeeping for 9 months of the year. In this area, small and marginal farmers, particularly adivasi and women headed households suffer from food insecurity. Major reasons for this include low productivity of land, reliance on one rice crop, lack of capital and lack of knowledge on diversified cropping. Bees are of great economic importance as they not only produce honey and wax but act as primary pollinating agents for many crops varieties. This project will introduce this technology to exploit opportunities for honey production and improved crop yields for marginalised farmers. CAFOD has agreed to employ an expert in Catholic Social Teaching and development for a one year period, in order to enable the organisation to reflect on its own understanding of development within this framework and tradition and advance its corporate understanding. Family based violence, divorce and desertion along with wage disparity, gender stereotype work and degrading social attitude towards women lead many women to migrate into unskilled work especially domestic work. Around 81% of Bangladeshi migrants migrate to the Middle East and 15% to South East Asia. Although government laws and policies direct safe, systematic and dignified migration, in practice there is widespread corruption, unethical recruitment practices where migrants are deceived of minimum wages, face violence, intimidation, deprivation of healthcare and in many cases become victims of trafficking. It is in this backdrop, that this project will contribute to OKUP's wider program working with approximately 196,000 potential migrants, those who have decided to migrant or returning migrants in Bangladesh. The number of refugees arriving in Bangladesh has been decreasing over the past months, with more than 24,000 in November, more than 3,000 in December and 1,888 in January 2018. The condition in the camps remains poor, as high population density has led to the exhaustion of initially installed temporary services, particularly sanitation, and there has been widespread environmental destruction of plants and trees, including roots, which have been taken for fuel. A lack of site planning in the initial stages of this crisis has created congested and dense camp layouts, that are lacking protection elements such as street lighting, and also strong shelters and accessible pathways. A Joint Response Plan (JRP) has been developed and shared with local authorities with plans detailed per sector, the current Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) is due to finish in February 2018. Across all sectors there has been a noted shift towards resilience activities focused on the upcoming rainy/ cyclone season. For example, for shelter/NFI the focus is shifting to shelter upgrade kits to help improve resilience to the upcoming rainy/ cyclone season, and immediate site improvements that will help minimise the risk of flooding and landslides. CAFOD’s partner Caritas Bangladesh will be working with 4 Maghi’s (camp areas of approximately 100 HHs, each with their own leader) in Palong Khali (400 households/ 2,000 individuals) to deliver the site development activities. More than 12,864 people have fallen ill due to flooding, water-borne diseases and other natural disasters. More than 25,677 houses are fully destroyed while 265,694 partially damaged. A total of 130,637 hactres of crops, 5,053 Education centers and Religious infrastructures, 304 bridges and culverts, 59,563 tube-wells, and 5,466 km roads have been damaged. A total of 286,051 livestock and 13,908 poultry birds died due to flooding. Caritas Bangladesh, with support from ADD (a specialist disability organisation), will carry out an assessment in the local community to understand suitable livelihood options for marginalised people, including people living with disabilities. This assessment will draw together the interests and abilities of people to participate in such livelihoods as well as analyse the local market potential to earn a sustainable income from the livelihood options. The main impacts of the Cyclone are as follows- * About 2.6 million people of 76 upazilas under 19 districts in Khulna, Barishal and Rajshahi divisions in Bangladesh were affected. * At least 26 people were killed due to uprooted of trees, wall and houses collapsed and boat capsized. * Nearly 55,767 houses destroyed out of total 205,368 damaged, destroyed 32,037 hectares of standing crops, vegetables and fruits; damaged 18,707 hectares of shrimp and fish cultivation plots and died 14,268 of livestock. * Damaged 440 kilometers roads, 76 kilometers of embankments, 40,994 toilets and 18,235 tube-wells by the Cyclone Amphan and storm surges. *According to a primary estimate, the cyclone caused damage worth around Tk 1,100 crore (BDT 11 billion). To further compound this extremely challenging situation, on 20th May 2020, the destructive Super Cyclone Amphan passed through Bangladesh hit the coastal south west region of the country, particularly affecting the disadvantaged people in Khulna and Satkhira districts. This means that more than 914,000 Rohingya are living now in overcrowded refugee camps in Cox's Bazaar district in Bangladesh and are completely dependent on humanitarian aid. The Kutupalong Expansion Site alone hosts 613,270 refugees making it the largest and most densely populated refugee settlement in the world. Two years later, the situation of refugees continues to be characterized by chronic under-funding and lengthy approval and coordination processes on the ground, which hampered the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected in a timely, effective and appropriate manner. People's needs remain high in all sectors. Safer and more durable shelters, which offer better protection against extreme weather, as well as educational and employment opportunities, are priority concerns for the refugees, but continue to be subject to very restrictive government regulations. The total population of the proposed working areas are 65,869 (32,445 men and 33,424 women). The learning from the first phase of the Vastenactie/CB project will be incorporated into Phase 2, such as the COVID-19 health and safety measures practiced through trainings being split into 10 students per class as well as PPE being obligatory in each lesson. The communities living in these areas face unregulated industrialization and urbanization that is further marginalizing the traditional livelihood earners. These districts are heavily populated and are victims of industrial pollution and expansion. In addition, communities face the risk of land grabbing by industrialists and realtors. The local government agencies and the environmental agencies have categorically failed to administer laws against such violations. Through a holistic approach, BELA will support these communities with legal assistance to resist environmental pollution and land grabbing and through the sustainable agricultural NGO, ALRD, Prakritik Krishi -Natural Agriculture, participants will receive training to achieve a total green transformation in the system. CAFOD's existing partners such as Caritas Bangladesh, will learn and if beneficial, replicate the learning in their own agroecology focused work. This funding will support Naripokkho's activism around the issue of violence against women in Bangladesh, and will aim to raise the issues faced by survivors of sexual abuse and rape, including the issue of honour, family and societal exclusion and treatment of survivors. The grant will support work on a project called the Forgotten Women of 1971 which is supporting survivors of rape and sexual assault during Bangladesh liberation war. Many of these women were rejected by their family and community, and are living in extreme poverty. Naripokkoho and likeminded organisations have worked tirelessly to advocate for the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) to recognise these survivors as 'freedom fighters' a term used in Bangladesh to recognise a persons sacrifice to Bangladesh during the 1971 war. As a result of this work by Naripokkho, the GoB has recognised these women as freedom fighters, giving them access to government welfare support allowance. This grant will help to fund a documentary which will raise awareness on the extremely challenging and poor conditions the women live in and be used to advocate for the way survivors of rape and sexual abuse are seen and treated in Bangladesh society. Bangladesh reported its first confirmed COVID-19 case on March 8; the first confirmed case was found in Cox's Bazar on 24 March, and the first COVID-related death on 30 April. It was feared that the Rohingya refugee camps at Cox's Bazar would be the ideal breeding ground for coronavirus; The GoB (Government of Bangladesh) along with the UN and other humanitarian partners working in the refugee camps have made significant efforts to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading further in the camps in Cox’s Bazar, and scaled up testing and emergency treatments centers in anticipation of large caseloads. Fortunately, these caseloads have not materialized: As of 31 December 2020, Bangladesh had reported 513,510, confirmed COVID-19 cases, 5,407 of which had been identified in Cox’s Bazar District, including 367 Rohingya refugees. About 70% of the total population live in rural areas and is dependent on agriculture. However, 80 percent of this farming population is small farmers with less than one acre of land. The widespread use of pesticides and fertilizers are contributing to degraded soil of the arable lands. The proposed working area is 42 villages from 14 wards of 2 unions in Agailjahara sub-district under Barishal, in Bangladesh. The working area has high vulnerability to impact of environment degradation. The problems identified will be addressed through the use of vermi-compost, an excellent soil conditioner, enhancer and bioactive fertilizer for the vegetables and crops in the immediate community as a whole. Vermi-composting turns “waste” organic materials, such as the huge domestic debris, food residuals and other bio-degradable materials, into a valuable product (vermi-compost) that enhances soil by increasing its porosity, water-holding capacity, texture and reduces erosion. Vermi-compost also helps vegetable plants and other crops grow bigger, increase crop yield, and decreases plant diseases and pest attacks. Hence there is huge potential to develop and sustain the agro ecology practices and natural resources systems including livelihood enhancement of climate vulnerable communities through producing and using vermi compost and reducing utilization of agro chemical fertilizer and pesticides. This supports pro-poor and pro-environmental development in line with attaining the SDGs and Bangladesh Biodiversity Act, 2017; Safe Food Policy in Bangladesh 2016, Agriculture policy in Bangladesh 2018 of Bangladesh Government. The whole area is hugely vulnerable to climate change, including high intensity cyclones and sea level rise. Floods and tidal surges frequently breach embankments, flooding areas with saline water which destroys crops and drinking water. The loss of land, livelihoods and decreasing productivity trigger migration. With more and more people looking to migrate, they rely increasingly on trafficking networks. Those most vulnerable are women from women headed households, children, and men from extreme poor families. Victims are forced into hard labour working in sweatshops or in construction with others being forced into prostitution. Modern slavery conditions can also be found in the Sundarbans region, including labour exploitation through fish and shrimp production and processing, as well as brick kilns where debt bondage is common. With this in mind, CAFOD has developed an 18-month pilot initiative which aims to support research and then scale interventions which address issues of climate change and modern slavery in the Sundarbans (both in Bangladesh and India). The project will start by forming a partnership with a leading academic institution or organisation to conduct a detailed assessment of the link in the Sundarbans (both in Bangladesh and India) between climate change, environmental degradation, migration and modern slavery. The findings of this study will be used to inform and refine project activities with aim to reduce the prevalence of people most affected by climate change and environmental degradation falling into modern slavery. Several lockdowns had a disproportionate impact on the most marginalised, including people living with disability. Those people with disability who could work, often worked in precarious informal work which made them particularly vulnerable. One report in Bangladesh found that 74% of people living with disability had lost all income sources. Similarly, although the vaccination programme in Bangladesh has made good progress, stigma and vulnerability mean people living with disabilities in rural areas are less likely than able bodied people to receive a vaccine and COVID prevention awareness messages often do not reach people with disability who remain within their homes. This project will provide a small cash grant to 360 people with disabilities who have particularly been suffering from the impact of COVID pandemic. In addition, the project will support vaccination registration and support to get vaccinated to 6,480 people, as well as COVID prevention messages to 4,500 people and the distribution of fabric face masks to 1,202 people with disabilities. As the impacts of climate change are increasingly manifest in rural Bangladeshi communities, Nayakrishi farmers are aware of the need to enhance their capacity to collect and distribute seeds among themselves to compensate for crop losses. There is widespread evidence that pesticides are inappropriately used in Bangladesh and that 70 per cent of the pesticides used are “extremely or very hazardous;" these enter the human system through consumption. Pesticides used in agricultural lands enter wetlands, destroying ecosystems and species. Previous global reports claimed that 43 per cent (6.3 million ha) of the total area of Bangladesh is also affected by various forms and degrees of land degradation. The Government of Bangladesh's Organic Agriculture Policy (2016) is yet to be popularized among farmers. This Policy proposed forming a National Organic Agriculture Taskforce and framing laws to promote organic farming. Neither the taskforce nor the laws have happened. Meanwhile, organic cultivation in Bangladesh only takes place on an estimated 2% of the country’s cultivable land. BELA will arrange online capacity building events for its network members on organic farming, and prepare a video on organic farming. This will be shown to the farmers and posted on BELA’s Facebook. For easier understanding, awareness materials e.g. posters will be prepared and disseminated. Field visits will help monitor the works of farmers receiving toolkits. BELA shall also conduct another research on the restoration needs of the threatened Chalan beel, a socio-economically and biologically important wetland of the country in Natore, Pabna and Sirajgonj districts. In order to earn foreign currency, migrants seek employment in countries outside of Bangladesh. Most are not able to ensure safe migration due to a lack of awareness and information. In many cases, potential migrants fall victim to fraud perpetrated by local brokers through payment of fabricated job and visa processing fees. As many families commit their savings to find the finance required for migration, if survivors1 of modern slavery and vulnerable migrants2return empty-handed, they are driven further into poverty with limited employment options, and often forced to sell remaining land or houses or valuable property. There are several interventions in Bangladesh targeting short-term and long-term needs of survivors and vulnerable migrants. However, many tend to be very localised without much likelihood of having a disruptive effect on the drivers of forced labour. Many also exclude men from receiving support. Government and other NGOs run programs but they do not meet the scale of the need. This project will increase employment/self-employment and income of returnee migrants through providing vocational and short duration trainings. Around ten thousand Rohingya refugee households in Cox’s Bazar have been affected by the cyclone, and over 1,000 displaced. 7,757 people in St Martin are affected, with over 1,033 houses damaged or destroyed and over 250 latrines and water tubes were fully damaged. In addition, 450 livestock and and over 1000 poultry have died, and over 5000 various types of trees have been uprooted. While various actors have responded in other areas addressing basic needs, food and WASH, St Martin's Island remains in urgent need of shelter and basic food, WASH and sanitation support. This project will provide 900 people within 200 HHs in Saint Martin's with the construction of community-led shelters. Many of their homes and villages were destroyed. Over 700,000 sought refuge in the Cox’s Bazaar area of Bangladesh. The Rohingya have endured decades of persecution & displacement, with over 100,000 Rohingya refugees already living in Bangladesh, primarily in the Cox’s Bazaar region prior to the August 2017 influx. CAFOD responded with support to two long-term CAFOD partners, Caritas Bangladesh and DAM, who were involved in the immediate, community-led response where local communities provided emergency relief such as food & shelter. A large-scale response was rapidly established with significant presence of UN agencies, international NGOs as well as Bangladesh national NGOs with significant experience of emergency response. This evaluation aims to draw together learning from across CAFOD’s Rohingya Crisis response to understand how best we can strategically support responses that align with & support our strategic priorities. There is an increased risk that without funding, the education centers will close and over 11,000 children in hard to reach areas will therefore have no access to education. This is vital to ensure that schools remain open, teachers are paid, and families are supported. The vast majority are landless living in unfavourable locations such as on roadsides or on embankments which are highly vulnerable to flooding or erosion. The project promotes established agroecology techniques and also trials new practices based on local and indigenous knowledge to strengthen household resilience to the impact of climate change. The techniques will have a regenerative impact on the environment, including improving the saline soil productivity, producing organic, safe food to improve household diversity and generating increased household income through the sale of agroecology products such as organic compost. Working with Patuakhali Agricultural University, Caritas Bangladesh will conduct research to assess the impact and viability of vermi-compost (an organic compost produced using earthworms) as a certified agroecology product. The refugee influx has overwhelmed the existing response capacity and put immense strain on infrastructure, services, resources and the local environment, and the extreme level of humanitarian needs has not decreased. The Government of Bangladesh and local communities have supported the refugees to the best of their ability, but solidarity has been increasingly strained as global attention shifts to new conflicts and crises. Caritas Bangladesh (CB) was one of the first humanitarian actors to respond in 2017, Despite decreasing funding, it has been continuously responding to the emergency needs of Rohingya refugees since then. In May 2024, cyclone Remal hit the southern coastal belt of Bangladesh having a significant impact on the lives of thousands of people, including a large number of the project participants from the Proyash project. Caritas Bangladesh has undertaken a number of initial assessments of the impacted area, including the impact on the lives and livelihoods of the Proyash participants. Although the assessment has shown the cyclone had a significant impact on the lives of Proyash participants, the initial findings suggest that the Proyash participants are better off and have been able to adapt and recover more quickly from the cyclone than neighbouring community members who were not practicing agroecology practices prior to the cyclone. Initial analysis suggests this is due to a number of factors including better preparedness initiatives such as moving plants/saplings above ground, raising livestock housing, protecting compost sheds as well as post cyclone agroecology initiatives such as using local seed banks to replant lost crops, starting to sell and use vermi compost (organic) again to increase family income after the cyclone. This study that will be done by BOKU university will aim to demonstrate more clearly the role of agroecology in mitigating the impact of the cyclone and highlight how agroecology techniques can help to strengthen resilience to climate change impacts and natural disasters. The Innovation for Wellbeing Foundation (IWF) has put together a comprehensive programme focusing on counselling and mental health capacity building tailored to the needs of the employees of CB. 142 staff members have signed up for individual counselling sessions. These staff members will be assessed to ascertain their mental health status. Individuals will be prioritised for individual counselling depending on the severity of their mental health status; it is likely that not all the 142 staff will require individual counselling. During the assessments, common issues will be identified to be looked at in group counselling sessions i.e. stress management, conflict management, and non-violent communication. Training workshops will be held for managers and supervisors to ensure they understand how to deal with the mental health state of the employees that are receiving counselling. They will be trained on mental health first aid, stress management, conflict resolution and difficult conversations so that they know how to identify stress and burnout symptoms. Management level will also be supported to identify gaps and assist in integrating mental health services at policy and practice level. This grant will run for two years. CAFOD will discuss with CB and IWF regarding more sustainable solutions to providing counselling support to staff after December 2026 and how this can be factored into CB organisational support to staff. Their families can also become more vulnerable owing to disrupted education and reduced parental care. As a result, these forests see an explosion in the rat population which, once the bamboo flowering ends, moves out of the forest into nearby fields and human settlements in search of food. This is known as a "rat flood". A rat flood started in September 2025 in Sajek Union (Rangamati District). It has caused severe damage to the annual "Jum" crop on which the target population, remote hill farmers from the Tripura and Chakma ethnic groups are totally reliant for their food security and livelihoods. As there is only one cropping cycle in this area, the loss of the crop leaves the communities extremely vulnerable both in terms of access to food, and the ability to plant during the next cycle. Caritas Bangladesh will provide 500 vulnerable households with 2 months of food, and cash to allow the purchase of agricultural inputs. To combat the spread of rat borne disease Caritas will also provide basic sanitary and hygiene awareness to 2700 people. Initial assessments of the lives and livelihoods of the project participants after the cyclone showed that they were better off immediately afterwards and able to recover more quickly than neighbouring community members who were not using agroecology practices. To verify and explore these findings, BOKU university carried out field-based research in July 2025 in collaboration with Caritas Bangladesh. It will be co-hosted by Colombia and the Netherlands in Santa Marta, Colombia. 53 nations will participate including Bangladesh and the UK. The objective is to initiate a concrete process through which a coalition of committed countries, subnational governments, and relevant stakeholders can identify and advance enabling pathways to implement a progressive transition away from fossil fuels creating sustainable societies and economies. This process will be informed by the experience and perspectives of national and subnational governments, academia, Indigenous Peoples, Peoples of African Descent, civil society, workers, the private sector, and other key actors at different stages of the transition. It is a complementary space to the UNFCCC and will contribute to the COP30 presidency's roadmap.
