With the signing of cease-fire between PALIPEHUTU-FNL and the government in 2006, there is a period of calm in all the Bujumbura rural hills. People who had moved to other neighbouring countries are gradually returning in their homes. Thus to this situation, social and economic life reconstruction becomes more and more imperative and urgent.
In Burundi, the main income generating activity of the population is agriculture: more than 95% of people live are based on their land. Thus, the land remains the main source of income for the vast majority of households but it no longer offers to them opportunities to support their self-sufficiency following the vagaries of climate change and various plant diseases (Cassava mosaic). Add to this the looting of livestock during the war years.
The project will contribute to solve the problems mentioned above, by distributing agricultural inputs, goats for domestic livestock and the rebuilding of peace among communities. The next step of the exit strategy was to get in touch with partners in order to review their current joint pieces of work and together to set up priorities and design an action plan in light of the planned changes. This includes any outstanding communication issues, the identification of change management processes and support needed by them, and the development of a sensible exit strategy, among other things. As part of this process, the current three years programme with our ODDBU partner, which is in the second year of implementation, was reviewed, and some additional activities have been identified in order to reach the objectives of the program and also to match with the exit strategy priorities.
The main objective of the additional activities is to train the governmental agronomists so they will continue the monitoring and support to beneficiaries after CAFOD withdrawal. The other objective is to set up local monitoring committee in each village where activities are implemented, so beneficiaries are able to support each other, in sharing experiences.</narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-BRN028"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-BRN028"><narrative>Organisation Diocésaine pour le Développement du Bujumbura</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="BRN028" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2012-07-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2013-04-30" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="BI" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="31161" percentage="100" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2012-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2013-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2012-07-01">14571.4285</value></budget><transaction ref="42648"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-06-22" /><value value-date="2012-06-22">14571.4285</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-BRN028"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="56610"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-07-12" /><value value-date="2012-06-22">14571.4300</value><receiver-org><narrative>Organisation Diocésaine pour le Développement du Bujumbura</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-BRN029</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Improving understanding and respect for human rights and civic responsibilities amongst Burundian po</narrative></title><description><narrative>The project aims to contribute to improving peaceful cohabitation in 4 municipalities of Bujumbura diocese through

The upcoming Presidential and Legislative elections are considered critical for long-term peace and stability of the country. Tensions, however, are continuing to increase. Protests between supporters of the opposing political parties have become increasingly violent, mostly in the capital Bujumbura, which is causing an increase in numbers leaving Burundi as fears grow for their safety and they seek refuge/protection in neighbouring DRC. During the demonstrations, there are some cases of wounded persons across the country and particularly in Bujumbura who are channelled in different hospitals, also internal IDPs are seeking protection in some secured public sites such as churches, parishes, schools...

As the situation in Burundi remains tense, unstable and unpredictable it is expected that more Burundians will flee the country. The UNCHR Regional Response plan (May 2015) has indicated that there will be 30,000 refugees by September 2015. A joint rapid multi-sectorial assessment (20-22 May 2015) undertaken by CAFOD, Caritas Uvira, CODEVAH and Action Aid in the localities around the Ruzizi river, which separates DRC and Burundi, confirmed an increase in numbers of refugees crossing the border each day and estimates that in Uvira alone this will reach 20,000 people by August.

Current analysis demonstrates a large proportion of refugees are women, children and older people. They are extremely vulnerable as they cross the border, and seek refuge in transit camps or with host communities. There are reports that the influx into Ruzizi plain, may exacerbate existing tensions between Burundi and Bafulero communities which will cause additional tensions and place already vulnerable groups at increased risk. Increasing demands on already over-stretched basic services, such as water services, is expected to intensify tensions and the health of refugees is likely to deteriorate as they cannot afford to pay for clean water. At present there is no sign of price inflation in the local markets, or for services, but due to rise in demand by increasing populations and by international actors procuring goods this could alter the local market economy. This will make already vulnerable groups extremely vulnerable and place their lives in greater danger.

Through this project, Caritas Burundi aims to provide medical care for 500 local and internally displaced victims of violence and food assistance to about 400 internally displaced households.</narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-BRN032"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="22" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-BRN032"><narrative>Caritas Burundi National Office</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="BRN032" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2015-07-28" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2015-08-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="BI" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="14030" percentage="100" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2015-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2016-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2015-07-28">10000.0000</value></budget><transaction ref="47431"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-08-07" /><value value-date="2015-08-07">10000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-BRN032"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="61398"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-08-20" /><value value-date="2015-08-07">10000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>Caritas Burundi National Office</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-BRN033</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Supporting fellowship activities of Caritas Burundi</narrative></title><description><narrative>CAFOD has no institutional presence in Burundi and Rwanda since March 2013 where he implemented a psycho-social and livelihoods program. However, CAFOD continues to support and implement a Peace-building program in the Great Lakes region in both countries including the DRC. For this reason and because of its contribution in socio economic activities in Burundi, CAFOD participated in CARITAS Burundi Country forum to mark her Golden Jubilee in December 2013. One of recommendations from the forum was to jointly implement common project symbolizing fellowship between CARITAS from North and CARITAS Burundi. Agreed project was the construction of a specialized medical Center. Caritas Burundi project aims implementing construction of the administrative block and lavatory as well as sensitization, preventive education and diagnostics activities for gynecological and breast tumors lesions. The project falls under the National Program for Health Development, and contributes to the reduction of morbidity and mortality; it is clear throughout his objectives that it contributes to improving the health of women and her development and we know that women is the pillar of sustainable development in Africa and in Burundi.
The project to be implemented will have as target group women in general, especially women who have already given birth and who have breastfed because tumors are usually observed among the women who have already given birth and women have breastfed babies.
The project will be implemented in Gitega in the center of the country 110 km from the capital Bujumbura, more precisely in Mushasha neighborhood in the town of Gitega, near Cathedral of Gitega and in the province of Gitega.

These groups were separated during the war that Burundi faced during 1993 and were people were killed on ethnic basis. The 2015 recent elections were held in a tense environment and regional and African initiatives are underway to require dialogue between those in power and the other major players in the Burundi crisis to prevent the country from slipping further into the war. Through proposed project’ activities, people living in IDP camps, returnees, demobilized and residents will have a framework of encounter and exchange in order to dispel mistrust. Each week, these people will hold meetings where they will discuss peace and coexistence. Project plans to implement 27 SILCs (Saving and Internal Lending Communities) consisting of 20 people each living together in the hills. CDJP will not fund the SILCs’ capital start up. The initial capital will be granted by contributions from SILCs members. The project is planning to grant small premiums for field officers who will be responsible for the supervision of these SILCS. One Internal Micro credit expert will support SILCs management. SILCs members will set a credit union that will be fuelled by contributions from members. After making contributions, they will proceed to the distribution of small credits to those who need them at an agreed interest rate in the group. SILC’s meeting planned will also be an opportunity to discuss the challenges of cohabitation in the hills and therefore an opportunity to resolve disputes. Project aims to focus on these common economic interests for beneficiaries that will promote collaboration, understanding, peaceful coexistence and even reconciliation.
By implementing this current project, changes that CDJP Bujumbura intends to contribute to are :
•	The conflicts are managed and processed peacefully within beneficiaries
•	The social and political injustices are reduced in communities targeted
•	Solidarity is consolidated between the war displaced, demobilized, repatriated and hills residents around Bujumbura
•	To gradually increase economic independence of SILCs members that will allow them to resist to political manipulation

The security situation across Burundi remains volatile and church leaders called to quickly engage an inclusive dialogue for decanting political situation. Burundian major donors withdraw for lack of democracy and human rights abuses within the country by rolling party
The project seeks to address the issue of social cohesion between displaced, demobilized, returnees and residents in the hills around Bujumbura in Burundi. These groups were separated during the war faced by Burundian in 1993 and were people were killed on ethnic basis. This project includes activities aimed to reinforce relationships and build mutual trust between these groups through consolidating SILC (saving and internal lending communities) mechanisms. Project plans to implement 36 SILCS consisting of 25 persons each living together in the hills. SILC’s meeting planned will also be an opportunity to discuss the challenges of cohabitation in the hills and therefore an opportunity to peaceful manage conflicts. Project aims to focus on these common economic interests for beneficiaries that will promote collaboration, understanding, peaceful coexistence and even reconciliation.
The activities included in this project will be carried out in the Archdiocese of Bujumbura. However, in order to be more efficient and efficient, and since our area of intervention is large, the CDJP Bujumbura will consolidate SILC experience in four parishes including RUSHUBI, MUNANIRA, KIVOGA and MURAMVYA as a new parish.

So far, many donors have withdrawn their support from the country due to poor democracy and human rights abuses within the country by the party in power.
In the past our, project have aimed at solving the issue of social cohesion between displaced, demobilized, returnees and residents in the hills around Bujumbura in Burundi. It is in that sense that our past entrance to address peace issues in our context were through SILC’s (Savings and Internal Lending Community) which offered a forum to discuss issues of common interest namely peace building and the challenges of cohabitation in the hills and therefore an opportunity to peaceful manage conflicts.
Being at the exit stage, our current focus and aim is run some quick spot check with the leaders of 14 main parishes of the Archdiocese of Bujumbura and define together effective sustainability strategy to upkeep the achievements of the peace building program even with limited means in the diocese.
CDJP Bujumbura will therefore organize meetings to sensitize the animators for their role in ensuring sustainability of past years achievements. We will as well aim at some advocacy activity with the annual archdiocese meeting to ensure and have the buy-in of the management board to strengthen the parishioner’s engagement in SILC movements.
