grant is a contribution towards two separate projects implemented by our partner Caritas Switzerland in response to the devastating earthquake of 12 January 2010 in Haiti. In the district of Gressier, located 45 kilometres west of Port-au-Prince in the direction of the epicentre, Caritas Switzerland is working with partners ITECA and the Diocese of Port-au-Prince to provide emergency shelter and kitchen kits to earthquake affected families. Furthermore, Caritas Switzerland will provide schools in Gressier with tents as temporary schooling facilities. In Gonaives, the capital city of the Artibonite region, Caritas Switzerland is working jointly with the Diocesan Education Office which supervises the running of small schools in remote areas. Together they are enabling children who have fled from Port-au-Prince to enrol in school, be supplied with school materials, and be adequately fed. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI057"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="21" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI057"><narrative>Caritas Switzerland National Office</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="HAI057" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2010-02-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2011-01-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="HT" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="11330" percentage="40" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="73010" percentage="60" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2009-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2010-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2010-02-01">267857.1428</value></budget><transaction ref="37020"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2010-04-20" /><value value-date="2010-04-20">267857.1428</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-HAI057"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="52545"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2010-05-21" /><value value-date="2010-04-20">267857.1400</value><receiver-org><narrative>Caritas Switzerland National Office</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-HAI058</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Haiti Support Group - The earthquake struck the West, Southwest and Nippes department with the epicentre some 17 kms southwest of Haiti’s capitale, Port-au-Prince. The Port-au-Prince metropolitan area (including the towns of Port-au-Prince, Carrefour, Pétionville, Delmas, Tabarre, Cité-Soleil and Kenscoff) suffered a substantial amount of damage.

The destruction of infrastructure is colossal. About 105,000 homes were totally destroyed and over
208,000 were damaged. More than 1,300 educational institutions and more than 50 hospitals and health centres have collapsed or are unusable. The Presidential Palace, Parliament, law courts, and most ministerial and public administration buildings have been destroyed.

The Caritas Port-au-Prince office, located near the national Palace, was totally destroyed together with the archbishop house and the historical cathedral of Port-au-Prince. Since the catastrophe, the office of Caritas Port-au-Prince was located in two rooms made available by Caritas Haiti.

This grant is a contribution to Caritas Port-au-Prince for the purchase of a new office in order to improve their capacity to respond to the emergency and recovery operation in Haiti.

The earthquake happened 17km south-west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. Aftershocks measured 5.9 and 5.5 respectively in the first hours after the quake and continue to occur. The Direction for Civil Protection (DCP) estimates that 222,517 people died, 300,600 were wounded and approximately 3 million have been affected by the earthquake, including 1.8 million who have lost their homes and are in need of shelter. Around 1,301,491 are the number of internally displaced people living in spontaneous/organized settlements and more than 600,000 have been displaced outside the earthquake affected areas. The Jesuit Refugee and Migrant Service (JRSM), one of the Progressio partners, is currently managing 7 of these IDP camps accommodating 1,189 individuals. They are facing different kind of challenges because of not only the scale of the emergency but also their experience to manage such complex situation. One the other hand some Haitian Civil Society Organisations, long time Progressio Partners, feel marginalised from decision making processes on reconstruction.
The project, Rebuilding a new and all inclusive Haiti: strengthening Haitian civil society in rebuilding their country has two components; a) monitoring the international aid for the reconstruction of Haiti (advocacy &amp; communications) and b) institutional strengthening of the JRSM (camp management).
The overall programme objective is to strengthen civil society and local government responses to the long term reconstruction and development of Haiti, especially those working on the Progressio core themes of governance/participation and environment:

This project presented to CAFOD will contribute to improve the environmental conditions of the population of Saint Jude Parish by reducing the potential risk of flooding and mudslides in Morne l’Hopital and by stabilizing and rehabilitating the ravines that endanger the communities living in the settlements below.
This project is of particular importance, not just for the environmental rehabilitation/disaster mitigation and their infusion of much needed cash into destitute communities affected by the earthquake, but also because they represent a shift from relief to recovery and reconstruction – offering long term benefits for the targeted communities.
With the expertise of Caritas Port-au-Prince, the communities living in the areas will build labor-intensive rock walls throughout the course of the ravines, which will serve to break flood waters and trap topsoil runoff, protecting the watershed, preventing mudslides and decreasing flooding in Port au Prince.
At the same time 10 community organizations will be supported by Caritas Port-au-Prince through training on soil conservation, tree nursery, reforestation and technical skills to make the system sustainable.

Around 1,301,491 are the number of internally displaced people living in spontaneous/organized settlements and more than 600,000 have been displaced outside the earthquake affected areas. And according to the United Nations le number of collapsed and damages houses rise 188,383.
Whereas Port au Prince shows a total damage of about 15 percent of the houses, the proportion of destructed houses increases alongside the Northern cost in the direction of Léogâne, the epicenter od the earthquake. Upper Petit Boucan, one of three sections in the commune of Gressier, is located in the mountains about 25 kilometers West of Port au Prince and 10 kilometers East of Léogâne, which is considered as the most affected area with 95% of the houses completely destroyed.
The section of Petit Boucan has about 18.000 inhabitants and measures eight kilometers from the North to the South. In the North Petit Boucan is facing the sea, while in the South the section’s terrain is climbing up to 750 meters above sea level. Whereas the North at the main road is a semi urban area with good accessibility, the upper part of Petit Boucan is a rural mountainous area and is only accessible through unpaved feeder roads and riverbeds
After the earthquake of January 12 Caritas Switzerland engaged in emergency aid projects in the earthquake affected areas in Gressier and Léogâne as well as in projects in Gonaïves and les Cayes for the displaced persons. During the emergency phase the strong ties to the local communities and programming experience in Gressier was particularly shown by the partner ITECA (Institut Technique d’Animation Communitaire), who runs a training centre for agricultural development since over 30 years in Gressier. Since February 2010, Caritas Switzerland engaged therefore in a close dialogue with ITECA on a reconstruction project for private houses in the most remote and rural areas of Petit Boucan.
To evaluate the needs of the community, Caritas Switzerland and ITECA have engaged in a housing assessment in upper Petit Boucan and identified 1.700 families in the mountainous area who have lost their houses in the earthquake. Both organisations will carry out a pilot phase in a first step which involves the construction of 100 houses (of which 10 will be covered by the CAFOD/DEC-funded components) and complementary infrastructure. Then the pilot phase will be analyzed to evaluate the house types as well as the construction process and the logistics in the field. This is vital for a realistic planning and to define the best strategy for the consecutive large scale construction phases for the remaining 1.600 households (of which 135 will be covered by the CAFOD/DEC-funded components). The attached proposal and budget consider the total of 145 houses that are funded by CAFOD/DEC.
During the implementation of the pilot phase, Caritas Switzerland and ITECA will be continuously evaluating the project and draw up best practices and lessons learned. With the experiences gained during the project the partners will be working out the follow up intervention for the reconstruction for the remaining 1.600 houses in the area, which is scheduled to start in the beginning of 2011.
The reconstruction of houses in Petit Boucan will improve the quality of life of the population by providing them seismic proof houses while they are rebuilding their live. It is in line with CAFOD strategy in Haiti showed in the outcome 3 of the programme framework.

In April 2010, the Haitian government reopened the schools but the situation remains critical as most of them are located in high risk areas and the conditions in which they are operating are even worse than before the earthquake.
The goal of the project is to reduce school children vulnerability to natural disasters by contributing towards the implementation of a disaster risk reduction programme in the most affected areas of Port-au-Prince. The purpose is to make schools in those areas safer, enabling them to act as a locus for disaster risk reduction, institutionalizing the implementation of emergency and disaster preparedness strategy within the Haitian education system.
The project will work in selected schools managed by the diocesan office for education (BDE) and the Education Support Centre (CAP). An effective methodology will be developed by CAP that can be replicated in other schools, influencing national level policy and practice in ways that can be easily replicated in other areas. A distinctive approach, adapting participatory vulnerability analysis for use in schools will be a defining feature of the project, helping to build the awareness and analysis of children, parents, teachers, ministry of education.
The primary beneficiaries will be 55 schools in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas with over 28,000 pupils (and their parents) and over 385 teachers (and school management committee members / directors).
This project will then increase the level of awareness of risk in schools, building knowledge among teachers, parents and children. Information on hazards, mitigation measures, hygiene, first aid and preparedness plans will be shared, both in the classroom and out through the parent committees. Overall children, teachers, parents will be trained on how to protect themselves against natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, landslides, etc.

Since the earthquake, Caritas Port-au-Prince has been implementing health activities in some camps and parishes of the diocese. However with the recent outbreak of cholera, the need for a public awareness campaign to support more communities is necessary in order to halt the disease. Furthermore, Caritas Port-au-Prince will provide hygiene kits including soap and chlorine tablets for the purification of water. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI066"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI066"><narrative>Caritas de l'Archidiocese de Port-au-Prince</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="HAI066" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2010-11-09" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2011-02-08" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="HT" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="14030" percentage="60" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="72010" percentage="40" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2010-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2011-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2010-11-09">23450.0251</value></budget><transaction ref="38344"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2010-11-12" /><value value-date="2010-11-12">23450.0251</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-HAI066"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="53200"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2010-11-22" /><value value-date="2010-11-12">23450.0300</value><receiver-org><narrative>Caritas de l'Archidiocese de Port-au-Prince</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-HAI067</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Emergency support to cholera affected population of the Artibonite department</narrative></title><description><narrative>On 12 January 2010 a devastating earthquake (7.0 on the Richter scale) struck Haiti, some 15 km west of the capital Port-au-Prince. According to the Haitian authorities it claimed the lives of almost 220,000 people. Around 300,000 people, some with life-threatening injuries, needed medical care. Official reports state that more than 500,000 people have fled Port-au-Prince for rural areas.
Since the earthquake, the Artibonite department has been facing the enormous logistical challenge of having to care for tens of thousands of refugees and providing the necessary infrastructure, shelter, food and medical support. To boot, on October 21st 2010, a cholera outbreak was confirmed by the Government of Haiti and since then has taken its toll. As of November 9, a total of more than 10,000 cholera cases and more than 800 deaths were reported. 76 per cent of reported cases are in the Artibonite department, over 22 per cent in the Centre department and the rest in Port-au-Prince.
Immediately after the first cholera cases were confirmed, Caritas Gonaives contacted Caritas Switzerland with a request for assistance, as the two organisations have been working together for a number of years and still have ongoing common projects. At the same time, Caritas Switzerland has already been working with Caritas Gonaives in the health sector before the earthquake and the outbreak of Cholera.
This current project have two main components: an information campaign by radio in order to halt the spreading of Cholera as soon as possible as well as the distribution of medical consumable supplies and water purification products in order to support those suffering from Cholera or those at a great risk of being infected.
This project is planned for three months and CAFOD contribution will cover 22% of the overall cost of the project.

The majority of this population are subsistence peasant farmers with an annual income of US$ 375 with some of them living in extreme poverty (less than a dollar a day).
These small producers belong to an organisation, “l’association des fraternités de Fonds Jean Noël” made up of 14 peasants’ groups. Access to agricultural inputs and technical support is practically non-existent. In addition to that soil erosion and unsustainable farming practices have significantly decrease the productivity of land and the livelihoods of people living in this locality.
The community is poorly served, both by the government bodies and non governmental organisations. This situation has been compound by the fact that the community organisation and participation in decision making is weak.
The project will strengthen farmers’ organisational structures and provide farmers with new agricultural tools, improved seeds, and other agricultural inputs, as beneficiaries have identified a huge need for agricultural activities and this will contribute to improving their lives and their livelihoods. They will be trained on modern agricultural techniques, on conservation and soil improvement and on management of farm income.

During discussion between CAFOD and Caritas Haiti, the need was identified at Caritas Haiti to strengthen their operational and institutional capacities in their response to the earthquake in January 2010. Under this framework and taking into account that Caritas is developing several projects on disaster risk reduction in the capital as a result of the quake, CAFOD and Caritas requested Progressio a development worker expert in disaster risk management, in order to build their capacity in this field.
The overall goal of this secondment is to strengthen the coordination, the technical and the organizational capacities of Caritas Haiti National Office so they can better support their regional offices (diocesan) in the implementation of disaster risk reduction programs and projects

This will be achieved through creating and strengthening income-generating activities, in particular for groups of women and vulnerable displaced youths based in Camp d’Espoir and other communities in Fonds Parisien. This will include creating a mutual credit fund to give grants to women, requiring financial assistance to support their business initiative, and supporting youths who have dropped out from education and work to resume their training.
The project will also contribute to strengthening respect for human rights and dignity in the village and camp. One aspect of this will be to raise awareness and strengthen links between existing and new residents (IDPs and repatriated migrants) in the area and promote a culture of peace. As part of this, activities will also be held for migrants being repatriated from the Dominican Republic. A recreation and leisure space will also be created, where artistic and artisan training will be provided to youths, and which will also serve as a space for the community to meet and share idea on the reconstruction of their country

In June 2010, CRS started development of the next phase in the response and initiated the transition from providing assistance in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps to supporting individuals’ resettlement in neighborhoods of origin. CRS has designed a 30-month, US$ 26,310,506 Community Resettlement and Recovery Program (CRRP) to help at least 25,000 families resettle in communities with integrated shelter, water and sanitation, protection, community infrastructure, and livelihoods solutions. Starting with cash for work and transitional shelter construction in June 2010, other programmatic activities gradually became fully integrated since March 2011 and are already under implementation . The multifaceted CRRP contributes to significantly improve quality of life in five of the worst affected communities of post-earthquake Port au Prince. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI077"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="21" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI077"><narrative>Catholic Relief Services, Haiti</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="HAI077" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2011-07-12" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2012-01-11" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="HT" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="14030" percentage="70" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="31161" percentage="10" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="32130" percentage="10" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="73010" percentage="10" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2011-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2012-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2011-07-12">418000.0000</value></budget><transaction ref="42306"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-01-12" /><value value-date="2012-01-12">27396.0500</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-HAI077"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="42383"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-01-12" /><value value-date="2012-01-12">390603.9500</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-HAI077"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="56011"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-03-26" /><value value-date="2012-01-12">262893.0800</value><receiver-org><narrative>Catholic Relief Services, Haiti</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="56015"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-03-27" /><value value-date="2012-01-12">155106.9200</value><receiver-org><narrative>Catholic Relief Services, Haiti</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-HAI078</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Supporting Haitian Health Facilities to Combat Cholera</narrative></title><description><narrative>CRS is building upon its current cholera programming with a six month project, “Supporting Haitian Health Facilities to Combat Cholera.” The project fills a critical gap in CRS’s cholera programming and in Haiti’s overall national response strategy to cholera by providing the necessary infrastructure at existing health facilities’ CTUs/CTCs so they may better control the spread of cholera and provide care to patients. WUC-II will be implemented under CRS’s broader Community Resettlement and Recovery Program (CRRP) that was developed as an early recovery strategy since June 2010. CRRP, a program that will continue through 2014, supports the resettlement of 25,000 earthquake affected families in communities of origin through integrated shelter, water and sanitation, protection, community infrastructure, and livelihoods solutions. When ISAAC struck, winds of up to 100km per hour caused the felling of trees, the stripping off of households roofs, and the destruction of already weakened structures still standing after the earthquake of 2010. Severe rains caused assive flooding throughout the town and the rural environs and took the lives of many of the livestock held by agriculturally dependant communities. Gardens and larger-scale agriculture was completely destroyed along with landslides due to the sudden onset heavy rains. As a result of the storm there was widespread damage and destruction to a huge number of commmunity and family livelohoods in the area, as well as damage to homes, and loss of shelter for those fmailies still living in tents.

The Department for Civil Protection (DPC) in the South Department has declared that 2169 famlieshave been affected; 6 people hvae died; 15 injured; 228 houses deatroyed; 1682 houses damaged; 259 houses flooded. In addition to this, smaller parishes around the town have reported a huge loss in agricultural and animal livelihoods. 4000 people are reported to have taken refuge in 26 centres of refuge.

A total of 27 parishes have been directly impacted by the storm among which 10 have been chosen by Caritas Jacmel in which to intervene. Selection of these areas has been made based on damage and vulnerability criteria. The response will combine both immediate suport to affected fmailies as well as supporting the recovery of livelihoods and the return to live as normal. caritas Jacmel will owrk directly with comunities and also in partnership with the parishes to ensure appropriate and efficient cover and response. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI086"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="23" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI086"><narrative>Caritas Diocésaine de Jacmel</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="HAI086" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2012-10-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2013-03-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="HT" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="11330" percentage="30" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="43040" percentage="30" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="72040" percentage="40" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2012-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2013-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2012-10-01">52071.1269</value></budget><transaction ref="43046"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-09-20" /><value value-date="2012-09-20">52071.1269</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-HAI086"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="56939"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-09-21" /><value value-date="2012-09-20">26035.5600</value><receiver-org><narrative>Caritas Diocésaine de Jacmel</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="57154"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-11-13" /><value value-date="2012-09-20">26035.5600</value><receiver-org><narrative>Caritas Diocésaine de Jacmel</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-HAI087</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>WASH in Schools Project</narrative></title><description><narrative>The WASH in Schools project comes within the wider Community Resttlement and Recovery Programme (CRRP) being implemented by CRS and co-funded by CAFOD. the CRRP programme aims to assist up to 25,000 households affected by the earthquake to resettle and reestablish their lives in their communities of origin. The programme is implemented in the communitieis of Carrefour, Solino, Christ Roi, Petionville and Mais Gate. This project enhances the 'pull factor' to motivate people to leave camps an returns to neighbourhoods. As the number of resettled households increases in these areas, the CRRP also seeks to include a focus on improving education service provision through a project to establish and reinforce participatory governance bodies, also known as conseil d'ecole (school council) in Solino and Christ Roi. furthermore, CRS proposes to strengthen the operational capcity of school councils in Christ Roi and Solino with an initial focus on managing school sanitation which will be reinforced by teacher's provision of hygiene promotion activities with students. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI087"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="21" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI087"><narrative>Catholic Relief Services, Haiti</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="HAI087" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2012-10-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2013-08-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="HT" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="14030" percentage="70" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15151" percentage="30" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2012-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2013-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2012-10-01">91646.6257</value></budget><transaction ref="43515"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2013-01-17" /><value value-date="2013-01-17">91646.6257</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-HAI087"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="57412"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2013-01-29" /><value value-date="2013-01-17">91646.6300</value><receiver-org><narrative>Catholic Relief Services, Haiti</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-HAI092</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Contribution to Caritas Haiti Hurricane Matthew Rapid Response</narrative></title><description><narrative>Hurricane Matthew formed on September 29, 2016 in the Atlantic Ocean. This Emergency Appeal follows on from the Rapid Response to support 6250 effected families to gain access to basic food items and promote the recovery of agricultural production; reduce the risk of spread of infectious diseases through awareness activities and provide shelter repair kits. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI093"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="22" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI093"><narrative>Caritas Haiti National Office</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="HAI093" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2016-12-10" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2017-10-10" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="HT" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="14030" percentage="20" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="72010" percentage="10" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="72040" percentage="40" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="73010" percentage="20" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="74020" percentage="10" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2016-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2017-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2016-12-10">45000.0000</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2017-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2018-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2017-07-21">27232.7307</value></budget><transaction ref="49225"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2016-12-15" /><value value-date="2016-12-15">45000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-HAI093"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="50018"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-07-26" /><value value-date="2017-07-26">27232.7307</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-HAI093"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="63133"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-01-16" /><value value-date="2016-12-15">45000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>Caritas Haiti National Office</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="63995"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-07-31" /><value value-date="2017-07-26">27232.7300</value><receiver-org><narrative>Caritas Haiti National Office</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-HAI094</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Caritas Haiti Rapid Response to support communities affected by the 2021 earthquake EA17-2021 </narrative></title><description><narrative>A 7.2-magnitude earthquake quake struck 8 km (5 miles) from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes on August 14th 2021, about 150 km west of the capital Port-au-Prince, at a depth of 10 km, the USGS said. The earthquake is potentially bigger and shallower than the magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Haiti 11 years ago, killing tens if not hundreds of thousands of people, flattening buildings and leaving many homeless.

Area most affected: southwestern part of the island, including the cities of Les Cayes and Jeremie and the surrounding area - these are the same communities affected by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. There is a very unstable situation in terms of civil unrest and gang activity - this has increased after the assassination of the president in July. Traditionally a very poor area of the island, 80% unemployment rate in the past and highly food insecure

As of 25th August there have been more than 2200 deaths, at least 130,000 houses damaged or destroyed, and at least a million people affected. Most pressing needs: Shelter; WASH; food; medical care; medicines.

Caritas Haiti are planning a 2 month rapid response, 1 Sep – 31 Oct 2021, with a budget of 241,566 Euros.

The response will target 1400 HHs (10,000 people) who have been affected by the earthquake and will be implemented by the Diocese of Cayes, Diocese of Jérémie, Diocese of Anse-à-Veau/Miragoane - under the coordination of Caritas Haiti.

The response will focus on providing food kits, hygiene kits, water, health kits and PPE.
