In order to realise their vision they network with other NGOs and Faith Based Organisations.
The major activities of the Diocese will be HIV and AIDS prevention and Management of HIV and AIDS. The prevalent practices to be tackled in part in the process are as follows:
- Sexual cultural practices such as initiation, rituals associated with death of spouse or other practices that end up exposing young girls ‘ being blankets for chiefs’
- Trading of sex for money
- Addressing inconsistent and inaccurate messages relating to the promotion of condoms
- Addressing stigma and discrimination which continue to suppress openness about HIV and AIDS
- Inadequate legal enforcements in controlling sexual exploitation of girls and boys in resort parts o Malawi and many other recreational facilities.
- Establishing an effective referral system
- Ensuring and facilitating accessibility of facilities to clients and communities , for example , PMTCT, ART

Faith-Leaders involved in this project will commit to a two-fold approach. Firstly, they use the trainings and meetings provided through the project to create awareness among their flock of the responsibilities of government within the MGDS and motivate citizens to get involved in the development issues. Secondly, they will undertake interfaith and direct advocacy activities with Government on issues of concern.

What The Project will Entail.
a)	Empowering faith-leaders through training on the rights-based approach to development and governance issues; taking government to tasks on its responsibilities with regard to poverty reduction, respect of human rights and rule of law.
b)	Supporting faith-leaders to undertake lobby and advocacy initiatives through timely dissemination of data.
c)	Increasing awareness at grassroots (through faith-leaders and coalitions) on their rights and how to exercise them, and the roles of the human rights bodies in promoting and protecting people.
d)	Increase awareness among citizens of their responsibility to participate in development issues that affect their local communities particularly through their local governments and build consensus on the importance of decentralisation as key to development and good governance.
e) Monitoring of MDGS implementation and sharing the findings in accessible format through faith communities and coalitions; to be done in tandem with a regular sectorial budget monitoring and analysis to ensure that resources are spent on priority areas as stipulated in the MGDS.

To accurately expose the prevailing living conditions of people and to facilitate deeper reflection on the underlying causes of injustices and to inspire value-driven action in the promotion, the CFSC shall concentrate on the three regions of the country  where it currently has contextualised Tobacco Estate studies, and Basic Needs Basket activities;

(a)	Blantyre Archdiocese (Covering Zomba District , Blantyre City and Mangochi District)

(b)	Lilongwe Archdiocese (Covering Kasungu District, Lilongwe City and Mchinji District)

(c)	Mzuzu Diocese (Covering Mzimba District, Mzuzu City and Rumphi District)

Although the actual contact with faith-leaders will take place at the above district headquarters, engagement with the grassroots will take place at community level; through small communities.

The Archdiocese of Lilongwe through its HIV and AIDS response aims at contributing to the reduction of new HIV infections and quality management of those living with the HIV virus.

By systematically targeting the youth, young couple in rural and peri urban Lilongwe , The Diocese HBC integrated programme will conduct awareness programmes using various strategies and use of appropriate media to convey messages on the causes, effect and impact of HIV in the family and community .

The programme will also try to address stigma, discrimination and denial in communities and to challenge those cultural practices that are causing the further spread of HIV. OVCs will be treated as a special component of the programme as it entails their access to treatment, care and support and education.
The programme will explore opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and other economic empowerment initiatives. By 2015 the programme would have reached about 6000 beneficiaries directly.

The program shall provide adequate and good quality management services to people living with HIV and AIDS through the provision of community palliative and home based care.

The testing in Kamuzu central Hospital’s short stay is a good practice in reaching the untested.

HIV testing to inmates is critical in reaching the special groups. The Lighthouse will continue with this service to link those that test HIV positive into care and support services including treatment

About 60% of chronic coughers at Martin Preaus Center test HIV positive. This knowledge of status will help in linking clients to care services and treatment. TB/HIV co infection makes them eligible for ART.

The Lighthouse would want to increase HIV ascertainment among TB suspects to 80%. Early Infant Diagnosis is a great PMTCT intervention and the programme will continue to provide HTC to the infants and link them to care services. Those that fail to return for DNA-PCR results will be followed and traced for the same.

Lighthouse commitment to HTC service quality continues with this objective. The partner observes and will continue to uphold the counselling and testing protocols and that SOPs are being followed. This is where the partner builds its strength to support MoH quality assurance systems.

Tenancy farming is an agricultural production system in which landowners contributes their land and often a measure of operating capital and management; while tenant farmers contribute their labour. Tenant farmers are often migrant farmers (i.e. they come from other regions of Malawi-most commonly from the southern Region) who are generally amongst the poorest of the poor in Malawi, and are vulnerable to abuse. They become tenants only because they are unable to find alternative employment or are unable to sustain themselves as independent smallholder farmers. They are also located in rural areas where conditions are worse than in the urban centres. The absence of legislative protection for tenant farmers is exacerbating and critical to the perpetuation of abuses and exploitation in tenancy system. The tabling, enactment and adoption of the Tenancy Bill has been extremely slow so far. This project therefore seek to mobilise for the tabling, enactment of Legal framework regulating tenancy system; increase tenant farmers' knowledge on their rights, obligations and ability to claim their space-(Education for confidence); and contribute towards creation of an environment that enables the coordinated, effective adoption of the Tenancy Labour Bill to prevent economic exploitation and other violations of tenants’ rights through media by 2015.

The management of large-scale emergency programmes by these local organisations such as Zomba Research and Development Department (ZARDD) places a great strain on their staff and systems. ZARDD, frequently has a much wider remit than emergency work and many of its staff and volunteers have little or no humanitarian experience. There is therefore a need for much greater investment to develop and reinforce permanent local capacity to prepare for and respond to emergencies.

The three core areas of capacity that ZARDD will be assessed against and supported are: Leadership, Skills &amp; Knowledge, as well as Systems &amp; Support Sectors. ZARDD has prioritised, Emergency Preparedness, Accountability, Design &amp; Response, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning, as well as fundraising  as areas of high priority in having their capacity developed/enhanced.</narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAL095"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="23" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAL095"><narrative>Zomba Research and Development Department</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="MAL095" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2014-04-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2015-12-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="MW" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15150" percentage="100" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2014-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2015-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2014-04-01">6460.7579</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2015-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2016-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2015-08-01">7966.6667</value></budget><transaction ref="46511"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-01-19" /><value value-date="2015-01-19">6681.5286</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-MAL095"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="49723"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-01-19" /><value value-date="2015-01-19">-220.7707</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-MAL095"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="46512"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-08-20" /><value value-date="2015-08-20">8360.2564</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-MAL095"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="49724"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-08-20" /><value value-date="2015-08-20">-393.5897</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-MAL095"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="60661"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-02-25" /><value value-date="2015-01-19">4452.2700</value><receiver-org><narrative>Zomba Research and Development Department</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="60732"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-03-06" /><value value-date="2015-01-19">2008.4900</value><receiver-org><narrative>Zomba Research and Development Department</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="61407"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-09-01" /><value value-date="2015-08-20">3983.3300</value><receiver-org><narrative>Zomba Research and Development Department</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="61525"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-10-20" /><value value-date="2015-08-20">3983.3300</value><receiver-org><narrative>Zomba Research and Development Department</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-MAL098</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Strengthening HIV testing and counselling services</narrative></title><description><narrative>The purpose of this project is to strengthen the provision of HIV testing and counselling (HTC) services to at-risk groups in urban and rural Lilongwe.
Operating within the Malawi Extended National Framework coordinated by the National AIDS Commission, CAFOD’s partner The Lighthouse Trust will focus on:
•	the provision of HTC to TB suspects and patients at Martin Preuss Centre, STI patients at Bwaila Hospital and inmates at Maula Central Prison;
•	increasing HTC uptake among pregnant and lactating women, at 25 rural health centres;
•	continued routine counselling and testing of the general population in all its sites, and development of linkages with the community home based care (CHBC) programs;
•	tracing and follow-up of infected infants, so as to enhance their linkage to antiretroviral treatment (ART) and related services;

It will do this through: training young people on HIV awareness and sensitisation and life skills, and providing support through youth clubs and activities; training experts and volunteers on services and support for PLWHA and OVCs; training communities in water and sanitation issues, and facilitating the establishment of water and sanitation committees and support structures; and strengthening the communities’ capacity to implement and manage these programmes.

The project will build on existing diocesan programmes and structures, in collaboration with other stakeholders such as government, NGOs, FBOs and donor partners.

Women are regarded as inferior to their male counter-parts, and most of them become victims of sexual and physical abuse. Access to education by girls is limited as compared to their male counterparts, and many girls are forced into early marriages, resulting in a large number of teenage mothers. This project seeks to further improve the right of woman and girls in St Ignatius Parish, Malawi.

Since 2012, CAFOD has supported Karonga Diocese, through its Justice and Peace Desk to implement a “Securing the Rights of women and Girls” project. The project managed to build capacity of local structures to deal with cultural practices that violate the rights of women and girls. Through the project, Karonga Diocese created and trained Women’s Rights Groups, which were responsible for raising awareness on cultural/traditional practises that violate rights of both women and girls, and referring cases of violation to the relevant authorities. The proposed project is therefore scaling up the work that Karonga Diocese has done through the "Securing the Rights of women and Girls” project. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAL102"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="23" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAL102"><narrative>Karonga Diocese CCJP</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="MAL102" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2015-04-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2018-03-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="MW" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15160" percentage="100" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2015-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2016-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2015-04-01">25000.0000</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2016-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2017-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2016-04-01">25000.0000</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2017-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2018-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2017-04-01">35000.0000</value></budget><transaction ref="46880"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-03-09" /><value value-date="2015-03-09">25000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-MAL102"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="47121"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2016-02-09" /><value value-date="2016-02-09">25000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-MAL102"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="47122"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-03-21" /><value value-date="2017-03-21">25000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAL102"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="50049"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-09-05" /><value value-date="2017-09-05">10000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAL102"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="60811"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2015-03-19" /><value value-date="2015-03-09">25000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>Karonga Diocese CCJP</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="62026"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2016-02-23" /><value value-date="2016-02-09">25000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>Karonga Diocese CCJP</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="63509"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-03-30" /><value value-date="2017-03-21">25000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>Karonga Diocese CCJP</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="64170"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-09-18" /><value value-date="2017-09-05">10000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>Karonga Diocese CCJP</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-MAL104</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Archdiocese of Lilongwe Palliative Care Project</narrative></title><description><narrative>The overall aim of this project is to equip a total of 197 volunteers with a sound knowledge in basic nursing, how to organise village savings and loans schemes, and how to provide sensitive and culturally appropriate psychosocial and palliative care, in Malawi. Accessing HIV testing and Counselling and anti retroviral treatment is a challenge throughout Malawi and in Lilongwe it very difficult especially for pregnant women and the sick who are unable to travel long distances to the available health facilities.

The Archdiocese has been working in the communities to provide palliative care and support to families and individuals most affected and living with HIV and AIDS. In addition the available rural health facilities are under staffed and under resourced forcing most patients to be attended to in the home and in their communities. It is because of the limited number of nurses that has led to community led home based care and support.
Fuelling the further spread of the pandemic are a number of challenges inherent within the communities in Malawi, such as:
poverty and the hardest hit are women and children who in the end make them selves vulnerable through engaging in sex work
Sexual cultural and religious practices such as the initiation rituals often associated with coming of age, or upon the death of a spouse and these rituals expose women and girls at most and spread to the bigger community.
Stigma and discrimination continues to suppress openness about HIV and AIDS resulting in late treatment care and support as well as defaulting on treatment
This project aims at equipping a total of 197 volunteers with sound knowledge and skills in basic nursing at village and community level and how to organise the village savings and loans schemes, and how to provide sensitive and culturally appropriate psychosocial support an palliative care. The project anticipates to reach out to over 1,200 people with chronic illness and living with HIV an AIDS will be assisted.</narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAL105"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org role="4" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAL105"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="MAL105" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2015-07-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2016-06-30" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="MW" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="13040" percentage="80" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="32130" percentage="20" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2015-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2016-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2015-07-01">1000.0000</value></budget><transaction ref="48072"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2016-02-09" /><value value-date="2016-02-09">1000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-MAL105"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-MAL107</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>ZARDD Cholera Response - Zomba Diocese (2016)</narrative></title><description><narrative>A Zomba Research and Development Department (ZARDD) response to a cholera outbreak in Malawi, Zomba Diocese through provision of knowledge on cholera prevention and management in three Traditional Authorities of Zomba District (Mwambo, Mtumanje and Nkumbira) and T/As Mposa, Nduwa, Kaugule, Mbiringano, Mkwate, Chiwanga, Mbando, Waiye, Chidothi and Chirambo in Machinga district .

Malawi is affected by cholera annually in isolated areas of the country, which is inclusive of Zomba. These cholera cases have been on an increase since November 2014 with over 2000 patients treated and more than 50 dying from the disease. There has been challenges in collecting information on these cases hence an underestimation due to unavailability of standardised surveillance system in the country. More than 30 per cent of the districts in the country are reported to have been affected with Cholera and at this time the epidemic has spread across all the regions of the country.

The outbreak could probably have risen due to the lack of safe drinking water and inadequacy of sanitation and hygiene. Management of cholera suspects was observed to be substandard by Health workers at both Diocesan as well as Government Health facilities where patients were admitted. Availability of resources to manage the suspected cases has proved a challenge in both Diocesan and Government facilities. Further to this, there has been slow response at District level in sensitisation of communities and alerting the Health workers on prevention and management of cholera respectively.

Cholera is preventable by ensuring access to safe water and appropriate sanitation measures. Death from cholera can be prevented through quick access to standardised treatment regimes in health facilities, something which this project seeks to address in Zomba diocese. The response covers needs in the area of surveillance and response, water and sanitation, infection control, social mobilisation and logistics. Sensitising Health workers in handling cases of cholera and alerting the community on hygiene and sanitation, as well as improving water safety will reduce morbidity and mortality.

This will be achieved through;
•	Training of Village Health Committees (VHC)
•	Conducting of door to door awareness campaigns
•	Sensitising food vendors in markets on hygiene; and production of banners and t-shirts, hygiene film shows and dramas.
•	Provision of High Test Hypochlorite (HTH)
•	Production and broadcasting of radio programmes.
•	Training of 20 Clinicians, 26 Nurses, 16 Lab Technicians, 4 Pharmacy Assistants and 4 Environmental Health Officers in Cholera management
