Mauritania faces ongoing food insecurity, which has been exacerbated in recent months. In 2011, poor rainfall affected crop production. According to a recent crop assessment, gross grain output is down 40% from the 5 year average. This, in addition to macro economic issues and price increases, has left many rural populations vulnerable to food insecurity. In Dec 2011 almost a quarter (24.6%) of the rural population was considered food insecure; almost triple than the same period in 2010.

Through activities such as the provision of assets (cash grants, seeds and small livestock), rehabilitation of water sources and establishment of community stores, this project aims to improve the food security and strengthen the long term resilience of more than 9000HH (estimated 5 individuals per HH) in the Brakna and Gorgol districts of Mauritania. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAN003"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-MAN003"><narrative>Caritas Mauritania National Office</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="MAN003" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2012-06-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2013-05-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="MR" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15150" percentage="100" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2012-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2013-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2012-06-01">60321.1382</value></budget><transaction ref="42711"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-07-06" /><value value-date="2012-07-06">60321.1382</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-MAN003"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="56617"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2012-07-11" /><value value-date="2012-07-06">60321.1400</value><receiver-org><narrative>Caritas Mauritania National Office</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity></iati-activities>
