This project will be implemented in the three municipalities (Villa del Carmen, Tipitapa, Dario). This new phase will build on this previous work and presence in the region. The Institute has worked with different themes to promote human development such as health, education, community organization, housing, and risk reduction and management. In addition, in these places there are strong grassroots partner organizations with trained leaders and well developed self-management skills. Additional organizational structures also exist in these municipalities such as farmer co-ops, credit unions, and women’s organizations. Parallel to this, the current government is encouraging an associative policy in rural areas.

The persisting problem in these rural areas is the lack of access to social and economic initiatives to improve agricultural productivity. This is the problem on which John XXIII will focus its next project, phase 4. The Institute will work to scale up and strengthen farmer cooperatives by building human capacities within all organizations located in the three municipalities. The idea is that families have access to social and economic alternatives such as technical assistance and credit, and build strong organizations that can influence decision makers.

The results of the project will be improved access to different capital resources including social, human, financial and natural capital that will allow families to increase income generation as result of the productive and economic activities implemented. The project will promote market access and technologies that improve the food quality such as food safety, and finally added value to the food through the agro-industry process. A risk and climate change management approach will be mainstreamed in all activities of these coops.

Nicaragua</narrative></title><description><narrative>On the issue of technical training and socio-economic enterprise, there is a high level of unemployment in Nicaragua, which generates an enormous social and political pressure in the country, where the largest percentage of the economically active population ( approximately 1.749 million inhabitants), is composed of young people between 15 and 25 years and that, according to several studies, they do not perform any permanent occupation as employment activity and / or production.

This problem, coupled with inadequate funding for vocational training, faces a shortage and discontinuity of resources to meet the competitive demands of the global economy, poses a challenge to articulate policies and strategies consistent with scenarios as to where to coordinate public and private efforts, as well as programs and projects of international development cooperation that can provide training and entrepreneurial alternatives for this population group that is growing economically and socially marginalized in the country.

One of the most important strategies for fighting poverty is education, training and job creation for the population. Traditionally the curricula of the country do not offer technical alternatives to the students training, which generates a lot of graduates that due to their precarious economic situation cannot go to college, the only possibility left to them is getting employment without qualification and in a worst case scenario, be unskilled work for EPZs, other industries or jobs where they perceive a very low salary, which implies a stagnation in their living conditions and greatly restricts their ability to improve their situation.

Hence the interest in developing actions to help answer this problem and influence and improve technical education in urban and rural population with emphasis on women, through the provision of technical training workshops for people - especially women - of surrounding communities and neighborhoods of intervention centers.

The project is aimed to develop sustainable means for women living in vulnerable suburban and rural areas to procure a better quality of life. Specifically it tries to help empower urban and rural women through training and access to sustainable socio-economic developments. It will target the rural community Lechecuagos in Leon and urban Ciudad Sandino in Managua and more directly women and girls. In total 360 people will be benefited direct and indirectly from the actions contemplated in the Project during three years.

The project, with the support of Misereor, has been extended and aims to support young entrepreneurs.

JWCT support is extended until 15 April 2020.

Nicaragua</narrative></title><description><narrative>Nicaragua is devastated by disasters due to climate change. In the last decade cycles of severe droughts and floods have caused enormous impact in the region. Nicaragua rates as the fourth country most affected by extreme weather events (Global climate index, Germanwatch, 2015). Nicaragua´s dry corridor where this programme will be implemented is agriculturally challenged but is the only land that subsistence farmers can access with 800 mm of annual rain. Here the malnutrition rate is 20%-27%, above the national average of 16% and the concentration of the most vulnerable poor is greatest (rural 68% versus urban 29%). The four municipalities where the partners work are identified as very critical to suffering recurrent droughts (Nicaragua Territorial Study Institute - INITER 2011). The frequency of natural disaster occurrences is increasing due to climate change. The region will be hit increasingly harder over the next 50 years unless action to mitigate and adapt (ECLA, 2009) is taken. These vulnerable rural communities are trapped in a cycle of poverty and lack of access to resilient livelihoods (water, nutritious food, incomes). This three year project will contribute to 900 HH increasing their resilient livelihoods and to reducing climate change vulnerability for men and women in the poorest communities in the dry corridor of these three departments. Given their central location their experiences and best practices will become known to other communities and people our partner work with. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC225"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="23" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC225"><narrative>Anonymous - excluded for security reasons</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="NIC225" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2016-04-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2018-03-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="NI" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="31161" percentage="100" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2016-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2017-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2016-04-01">17605.6338</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2017-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2018-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2017-04-01">13787.8787</value></budget><transaction ref="48225"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2016-02-29" /><value value-date="2016-02-29">17605.6338</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-NIC225"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="49357"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-08-17" /><value value-date="2017-08-17">13787.8787</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC225"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="62071"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2016-03-14" /><value value-date="2016-02-29">17605.6300</value><receiver-org><narrative>Anonymous - excluded for security reasons</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="64076"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2017-08-24" /><value value-date="2017-08-17">13787.8800</value><receiver-org><narrative>Anonymous - excluded for security reasons</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-NIC242</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Contributing to the reduction of violence, sexual exploitation &amp; discrimination against HIV in León</narrative></title><description><narrative>Commercial sexual exploitation of children and adolescents is a serious violation of human rights, a form of modern slavery, degrading and a crime against humanity, affecting the development of children, causing physical, psychological and moral damage, attacking their dignity, identity and self-esteem. It is a structural and multi-causal problem.
With the health crisis, restrictions, self-confinement and the fear of contagion, children were out of school, with less access to support networks and more virtualised with many hours in front of mobile phone screens, whether for online classes, homework or entertainment, without the supervision of an adult.
The project is a 3 year accompaniment process with adolescents in vulnerability to sexual violence and sexual exploitation, applying the Mary Barreda Association (MB) working method, with 34 years of experience. MB works on the reduction of risk factors and the increase of protective factors, to achieve emotional recovery, the strengthening of family ties, social and family reintegration. The approach differentiates those in a situation of sexual exploitation and those at risk, so that they do not reach the situation - preventive approach -, both with individual and group attention, the work with families being one of the main strategies, to develop a facilitating context to positively favour their processes. MB will work with adolescents and families in the peripheral neighbourhoods of León, Los Poetas sector.
MB aims that people recognise all expressions of violence as not natural nor inevitable: trafficking, sexual exploitation, HIV, criminal acts violating the rights of children, adolescents and adult women, must be reported to the corresponding bodies guaranteeing their protection. This is done through campaigns with the general population: written, radio, tv, distribution of comms materials, mass awareness activities, social networks, website, promotion and testing of HIV, workshops, meetings.</narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC242"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org type="23" role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC242"><narrative>Anonymous - excluded for security reasons</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="NIC242" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2023-01-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2025-12-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="NI" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15110" percentage="80" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15150" percentage="20" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2022-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2023-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2023-01-01">24999.9928</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2023-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2024-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2024-01-01">25000.0000</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2024-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2025-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2025-01-01">25000.0000</value></budget><transaction ref="55490"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2021-11-30" /><value value-date="2021-11-30">25000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC242"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="56976"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2021-11-30" /><value value-date="2021-11-30">-0.0072</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC242"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="57704"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2024-02-07" /><value value-date="2024-02-07">25000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC242"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="58611"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2025-01-23" /><value value-date="2025-01-23">25000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-NIC242"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="71865"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2023-03-06" /><value value-date="2021-11-30">24999.9900</value><receiver-org><narrative>Anonymous - excluded for security reasons</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="72974"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2024-02-19" /><value value-date="2024-02-07">25000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>Anonymous - excluded for security reasons</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="73936"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2025-02-04" /><value value-date="2025-01-23">25000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>Anonymous - excluded for security reasons</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity></iati-activities>
