It has been working on HIV prevention with adolescents in state secondary schools in Metropolitan Lima and nationwide since 1990. It has succeeded in having its approach adopted by local health authorities and backed by the School and Adolescent Health Division of the Ministry of Health. It strengthened 10 youth groups in three cities to lobby local government to implement HIV prevention programmes for young people, and two youth groups secured funding from the municipal ‘participative budget’ for improvements to prevention measures and care for young people. The current project will build on IES' work on youth employment, helping young people in schools to set up businesses, in collaboration with the Municipal Government of El Callao. The project also has a another component which addresses violence faced by young people in the community and in couples, involving training for young people on issues ranging from personal development to HIV prevention in the framework of prevention of violence. IES works with youth groups to help them lobby for violence prevention work, with the aim of having protection services and local government take measures to address the issue. In a context of high levels of impunity for human rights violations the Vicariate also works to demand reparations for the victims of political violence. Over the previous project’s cycle (2014-2016) DHSF developed a strong participatory water monitoring system and, with the support of Newcastle University, it began a water balance study of the Canipia river basin as well as a water inventory. Puno is one of the poorest regions of Peru, and it is increasingly affected by major socio-environmental conflict. 25% of Puno’s land is under mining concession, and there are 257 registered mine tailings. In the last 15 years, the water available for farming and animal husbandry in this area has been severely contaminated by human and mine waste. Likewise, because the amount of rain in the area has diminished and the rainfall patterns are no longer the same, the rivers and lakes are drying – up and the animals are forced to drink greater quantities of the contaminated water. As a direct consequence the size of the herds is steadily decreasing alongside families’ incomes. Suma Marka is a small NGO specialised in the preservation of biodiversity and participatory monitoring of environmental conditions in Lake Titicaca. Over the last nine months, Suma Marka has worked with communities, local, regional, and national decision-makers, as well as CAFOD partners in Bolivia and Peru, developing a simple yet very effective water monitoring scheme. The project also aims to implement a creative space for young people currently following technical or professional courses, from rural and urban areas. In many cases they know the needs of rural populations first-hand. The space will enable them to propose and execute low-cost projects, through seed funding, that have a socio-environmental impact, with the support of a network of local, national and international professionals seeking a space to share their experiences and knowledge. In the first year of the project, forestation and protection of water source activities will be completed in the Chacas lagoon microbasin, along with monitoring with the school and university. Suma Marka will also develop a comprehensive platform for virtual training and reporting on the results of and tools used for community environmental monitoring. This will allow participants to have direct access to the information that has been gathered, and will also be available to their partner institutions. CAFOD's project, as part of this wider project, sets out to strengthen the participation of Amazonian indigenous women in preparations for and attendance at the synod now that the Instrumentum Laboris has been published, so that their voices are heard and that the Amazonian church gathers together all of these voices. The project will focus primarily on four rights: education, protection, participation and a healthy environment. Skills of communities and children's organisations will be strengthened to monitor and prevent situations that violate the rights of children and teenagers, particularly in the pandemic and post-pandemic context where the lives of children and teenagers have been dramatically impacted. The response capacity of local government and other government entities will also be strengthened to meet demands, guarantee rights and prevent violations. Medicines to alleviate CV19 symptoms, once available for purchase without a prescription, are now only available with a prescription and at vastly increased prices due to their shortage. Local families and Venezuelan migrants have been identified through the parishes and pastoral workers in the two proposed areas of intervention. These two areas have been selected, as they are two of the worst affected districts in Lima and indeed in Peru. These are families living in poverty and extreme poverty who are not in work, nor able to earn and income, including people who are isolated due to CV19. They are food insecure as they do not currently feature on lists to receive state support through the government grant or food basket schemes due to incomplete and inaccurate local records. This project will provide food rations to 30 people who have fallen between the cracks and who have no income, for 2 months. PPE will be provided as needed in the soup kitchens where the food will be prepared and collected from. As a result of COVID, a further 3.3 million new people living in poverty, 10 million people in total, or a third of the population. Lima has been one of the worst hit areas. Marginalised urban communities have severely affected due to deepening of their socio-economic vulnerabilities, lack of access to health clinics and hospitals, and insufficient medical equipment and medicines. Schools in Lurigancho report increased violence and emotional distress, underscoring the urgent need for support for young people. Both districts also face severe disaster risks, including earthquakes, mudslides and floods, due to precarious housing on unstable land. Civic participation is low: though youth make up 27% of the electorate, only 32% voted in the 2022 local elections. Gender gaps remain stark—women have lower rates of formal employment (45% vs. 68% for men), carry heavy unpaid care burdens and have limited leadership roles. Caritas Chosica has designed an integrated project that responds to these intersecting challenges by strengthening food security, emotional well-being, disaster preparedness and civic engagement. Families will improve nutrition and resilience through home and community gardens using agroecological methods, with women producers supported to commercialise surplus goods. A central focus is on adolescents and schools, where trained promoters will offer listening support, basic counselling and safe spaces for workshops and recreational activities. Communities in high-risk zones will form and train volunteer brigades to carry out preparedness drills and awareness activities. Ahead of the 2026 elections, young people, women and local leaders will participate in civic education spaces that promote informed voting and ethical participation. Through an intercultural, synodal, and rights-based approach, the initiative promotes recognition of the leading role of Indigenous women in defending their rights, caring for the Amazon, and building a more participatory and inclusive Amazonian Church. The project will work closely with the five regional offices of the Centro Amazónico de Antropología y Aplicación Práctica (CAAAP) in Ucayali, Junín, Amazonas, San Martín, and Loreto. It will strengthen knowledge management and a training-of-trainers process to expand the territorial reach of experiences and lessons learned in recent years, develop a shared indigenous women's agenda and strengthen strategic communications and advocacy capacities. The initiative will also strengthen Indigenous women’s organizational and advocacy capacities so they can participate more actively in church, community, and public spaces related to the defense of collective rights and the protection of their territories. A key component of the project is communication and knowledge management. Building on previously systematized experiences, the project will produce a conceptual note and training materials on gender from the perspective of CAAAP and Amazonian Indigenous women. It will also generate communication content that amplifies Indigenous women’s voices, proposals, and experiences, strengthening their role as spokespersons and their presence in regional and national dialogue spaces.
