GB-CHC-285776-RWA127CAFODIt is an association of genocide widows created in 1995, in partnership with CAFOD since 1996. It aims to promote the integration of the widows and strengthen their self-promotion and participation in the process of development in Rwanda. As part of the 3 years psychosocial programme, the AVEGA project in 2008 is mainly training and supervision of psychosocial animators, individual and group counselling. AVEGA will be conducting activities aiming at the social integration of the population affected by trauma, social cohesion and reconciliation through community based approaches. The programme also contains other activities aiming at reducing the vulnerability of women and children mostly orphans with the objective of increasing access to justice. The main activities planned in 2008 are: assistance in school materials to 450 children, 20 houses rehabilitation, training of 120 new paralegals and refresher course for 220 Psychosocial Animators, 2600 clinical supervisions for APS, training in stepping stones for communities, special assistance in basic needs for 300 widows and orphans, special medical care for 10 widows and funeral assistance to 20 households. AVEGA will receive funds for overheads administrative and capital costs. Counselling sessions are planned all the period of the year and are due to be done by both Trauma counsellors and Psychosocial Animators (APS). Being the first trauma service provider in the country in terms of training and trauma counselling, it helps CAFOD partners by building their capacities in Trainings and supervision of counsellors. In 2008, they planned the building of two playing grounds to promote social and community cohesion, trainings: for 40 paralegals, 60 new APS, for 60 church and community leaders at parish and basic level. A stepping stones training session for community is planned to be done by trainers trained in the first year. They will be trained on elementary livelihoods skills (agriculture, pastoral, micro enterprises, etc.) and will participate in constructing new equipment to accommodate their new livelihoods options. Learning and exchange visits will be undertaken by beneficiaries, visiting others who started such activities before and have gained more experience. • Caritas Nyundo will sensitize and support the constitution of self help groups, will initiate fruit and vegetable farming for households, using fertilizers and improved seeds to ensure increased production and income generation. With aid from 8 Caritas members of the Network Caritas Internationalis, Caritas Rwanda was able to provide assistance to these families with non-food items, including blankets, jerry cans, plates, spoons, cups, ladles , soap, buckets, mats, napkins, toilet paper, pots, cloths for ladies and thrift stores for children and adults. All these aids were highly appreciated by the beneficiaries who arrived in Rwanda stripped of everything. Today, despite the assistance provided by the Caritas Rwanda, the Government and other humanitarian organizations, the need for food and non-food items remain enormous in Kigeme camp. In addition to 4000 refugee households already living in that camp, there have added other hundreds of people who fled the fighting that led to the fall of Goma; most of them are women and children. Note that women and children are the most affected of this war and require special attention. Caritas Rwanda continues its advocacy work for these people in need with humanitarian organizations to find one that could help relieve their misery. This is otherwise known as the "Sustainability Project" of the Peace building project that aimed at drawing the people together, the people of the bordering dioceses of Cyangugu (Rwanda), Bukavu and Uvira (DRC) and Bubanza (Burundi)." This project has provided a framework for collaboration and mutual dialogue between the people of the project area. At the end of the project, they now condemn feelings of hatred, mistrust, tension etc and are actively engaged in cross-border rapprochement initiatives for peace and reconciliation. This project leaves behind lots of success requiring a much more thoughtful strategy to strengthen sustainability on the ground. This project comes-in handy to support and pave the way for community defined mechanisms for Peace-building self-supported initiatives. The project will be line-up for 6 months with activities to build the community's stronger ownership of the results achieved. By the end of this project, we endeavor to have created an operational and permanent community based monitoring network of peace building actions between the parishes that have been part of the project. The regular connection and a permanent framework of collaboration between the parishes bordering the targeted dioceses will be maintained even after the project (joint and bilateral participation in events, twinning continued, permanent sharing of information) This will be done through the commitment of the structures set up in the parishes finally to continue the rapprochement as did the CDJP through the project that is coming to an end. This will have the effect of maintaining the attitudes of the cross-border population to resist prejudices and overcome any divisions that may arise from one moment to the next.
