in the Gender Programme structure below. In summary they are:
"	to raise and deepen awareness of issues of gender-based violence among church communities as well as other social groupings.
"	to develop a better understanding of how men's attitudes, beliefs and understanding of their identity contributes to gender inequalities.
"	to facilitate women's theological and spiritual development: to contribute to a gendered understanding of poverty and how women cope and survive in a rural or semi-rural setting given the HIV/AIDS situation.
"	to research and develop an intervention in the HIV/AIDS crisis that targets the most vulnerable at the most impressionable stage of their lives - i.e. pre-teen and teenage children.
"	to generate a vision of hope with respect to HIV/AIDS in the churches and in society as a whole.

development project and aims improve the quality of life of OVC in KZN. The project will attain this through building the capacity of 19 to 20 communities in Msunduzi (Pietermaritzburg) and Richmond in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa to respond to the basic material, physical, cognitive and emotional needs of their orphans and vulnerable children (OVC).
The project activities include promotion of the livelihood security of OVC through Food security, shelter, health monitoring and life skills activities. Other activities include early learning centre support and development, advocacy for fee exemption and child rights, provision of school resources, monitoring school attendance and performance of OVC, counselling, caregiver placement and memory box initiatives. Through this developmental approach, Thandanani endeavours to empower and support community based volunteer teams in the provision of care and support to OVC.Project is aimed at strengthening the capacity of those involved in OVC care to the point where they can independently respond to the needs of OVC within their community.
In this way, they aim bring about fundamental changes at the individual, household and community level that alter the basic conditions of existence and assist individuals, households and communities to break the cycle of poverty that entraps them.

This will be achieved through mobilising communities, churches, communities to campaign and advocate for their rights. More importantly, the programme will work at community level to change perceptions, views and cultural practices that are detrimental and catalyst of violence, HIV and AIDS and crime. To date, KZNCC has recorded notable success in bringing changes within the Church, as Church leaders have become active agents of change in addressing the challenges and problems faced by residents of KZN. </narrative></description><participating-org type="21" role="1" ref="GB-CHC-285776" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-SAF314"><narrative>Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD)</narrative></participating-org><participating-org role="4" activity-id="GB-CHC-285776-SAF314"><narrative>KwaZulu Natal Christian Council</narrative></participating-org><other-identifier type="A1" ref="SAF314" /><activity-status code="3" /><activity-date type="2" iso-date="2009-04-01" /><activity-date type="3" iso-date="2012-03-31" /><contact-info><organisation><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></organisation><email>cafod@cafod.org.uk</email></contact-info><recipient-country code="ZA" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="13040" percentage="20" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15150" percentage="20" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15150" percentage="20" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15160" percentage="20" /><sector vocabulary="1" code="15180" percentage="20" /><policy-marker code="2" significance="2" /><default-flow-type code="30" /><default-finance-type code="110" /><default-aid-type code="C01" /><default-tied-status code="5" /><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2009-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2010-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2009-04-01">20000.0000</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2010-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2011-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2010-04-01">20000.0000</value></budget><budget type="1" status="1"><period-start iso-date="2011-04-01" /><period-end iso-date="2012-03-31" /><value currency="GBP" value-date="2011-04-01">20000.0000</value></budget><transaction ref="34141"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2009-03-26" /><value value-date="2009-03-26">10000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-SAF314"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="34259"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2009-03-31" /><value value-date="2009-03-31">10000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-SAF314"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="36288"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2010-03-05" /><value value-date="2010-03-05">20000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-SAF314"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="39097"><transaction-type code="1" /><transaction-date iso-date="2011-03-15" /><value value-date="2011-03-15">20000.0000</value><provider-org provider-activity-id="GB-1-202669-SAF314"><narrative>CAFOD General Funds</narrative></provider-org></transaction><transaction ref="50603"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2009-04-30" /><value value-date="2009-03-26">10000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>KwaZulu Natal Christian Council</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="50604"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2009-04-30" /><value value-date="2009-03-31">10000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>KwaZulu Natal Christian Council</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="52668"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2010-06-25" /><value value-date="2010-03-05">20000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>KwaZulu Natal Christian Council</narrative></receiver-org></transaction><transaction ref="53907"><transaction-type code="3" /><transaction-date iso-date="2011-03-28" /><value value-date="2011-03-15">20000.0000</value><receiver-org><narrative>KwaZulu Natal Christian Council</narrative></receiver-org></transaction></iati-activity><iati-activity hierarchy="1" xml:lang="en" default-currency="GBP" last-updated-datetime="2026-06-01T00:00:00"><iati-identifier>GB-CHC-285776-SAF315</iati-identifier><reporting-org ref="GB-CHC-285776" type="21"><narrative>CAFOD</narrative></reporting-org><title><narrative>Gender and HIV&amp;AIDS</narrative></title><description><narrative>Outcomes:

Outcomes:
1. At least 44 capacitated Parish AIDS co-ordinators and 460 new HIV&amp;AIDS volunteers implementing HIV &amp;AIDS programmes, providing psycho-social support in their Parishes.
2. Increased awareness and information dissemination around HIV&amp;AIDS within sodalities in the Diocese of Mariannhill.
3. Strengthened Capacity and support to local parish/mission in project management in responding to HIV&amp;AIDS challenges.

At least 44 Parish Coordinators, 500 volunteers and 15,000 families in the Mariannhill Diocese are set to benefit from a proposed programme being implemented by Home and Family Life Foundation (HFLF) in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. This will be done through the capacity development and strengthening of volunteers, Church structures, children and stakeholders within the Diocese. Additionally, the programme will spearhead issues around awareness raising, information dissemination as a precursor to mobilisation, campaign work and advocacy. This will be achieved through support to local parish/missions. Finally, the programme also seeks to empower children especially Orphans and other vulnerable Children (OVC) in rights consciousness to enable children to claim and protect their rights. This action will be executed initially over 3 years with the hope that CAFOD will agree to extend the programme support to 5 years for effective programming and allow for measuring impact.
