The eastern and central parts of the island suffered significant damage, with over 75% of buildings damaged or destroyed by strong winds and flooding. It is estimated that 60% of the island of Grand Bahama was flooded.
Priorities throughout the affected areas are restoring essential services such as water supply and electricity, distribution of clean water and hygiene/health/dignity kits, fuel and building materials for reconstruction. As the response shifts into the recovery phase, many families lack options for housing. Displaced families with financial resources have left the island, and those that remain are sharing space in crowded homes of relatives and friends. Particularly for those still displaced and in shelters, home repairs need to prioritize debris clearing and mold removal before families can safely rebuild.
CA/ADN will work in collaboration with church leaders, community leaders, and the Rand Hospital in Freeport, Grand Bahama to provide psychosocial care for hurricane affected families in Freeport and cash assistance for repairs to houses deemed more vulnerable in the Freeport and West End areas, which together represent two-thirds of the total population of the affected island, with 27,000 people in Freeport and 13,000 in West End.
