Cumulative annual inflation is 700%, the highest in the world, and the IMF has projected a 1200% increase for next year. Specific food inflation, reflected by the state's food program, was 833% last year. Health is deteriorating due to a severe shortage of pharmaceuticals of more than 85%. This situation has led to a resurgence of diseases that were thought to have been eradicated, in particular: malaria, diphtheria and tuberculosis. Acute malnutrition in children under 5 years has tripled in less than 2 years and exceeds the level allowable by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Current Emergency Appeal aims to increase the access of the Venezuelan population to medicines, nutritional supplements and complementary food, in addition to restoring and rehabilitating the potential of organizations and communities through the strengthening of their capacities.

The EA will provide continuity to the projects implemented by Caritas Venezuela since 2015 which aimed at improving access to health and food for the most vulnerable population. The EA was launched in 2020 and set to last 36 months (2020-2023) to improve the response to the health and nutrition-related needs of the most vulnerable communities, now aggravated by the additional needs created by COVID-19.

Caritas Venezuela proposed a range of complementary interventions, involving diocesan and parish Caritas agencies, with two interconnected strategic axes: food security, nutrition, wash, cash and health. These activities include the provision of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) kits, hygiene, nutritional supplements for children under 59 months, pregnant and lactating women, as well as food for daily consumption of vulnerable families. The intervention will be complemented by a small-scale component of face-to-face, virtual, telephone and other training.
