GB-CHC-285776-WBN002CAFODThis project aims at improving the quality of life of Palestinian people through providing pro bono legal aid and advice to individuals and groups in cases of human rights violation either by Israel or the Palestinian authority. Beneficiaries include farmers and their families, women, people with disabilities, administrative detainees and their families, and families affected by house demolition and related issues. Jerusalem Legal Aid Centre (JLAC) provides special consideration for clients on low incomes, and those who have limited or no other access to legal services, taking up over a thousand cases in a typical year. Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) co-ordinates EAPPI in the UK and Ireland. Each year a number of Ecumenical Accompaniers (EAs) from Britain and Ireland are recruited and given training in non-violence, personal safety, and how to document human rights abuses. They then serve in Israel-Palestine for three months. Their presence provides some protection to vulnerable communities, and while in post they do what they can to monitor and report human rights abuses, and support Palestinians and Israelis working together for peace. A large part of their work is just to enable people to go about the daily routines of everyday life without disruption: hold-ups and lengthy delays at checkpoints apply even to patients going to hospital and teachers travelling to schools, but the intervention of an EA can often resolve the difficulty. On their return to this country the EAs undertake speaking tours to give a first-hand account of their experiences, and to advocate a just and peaceful resolution to the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict through an end to the occupation, respect for international law, and implementation of UN resolutions. The forum can also serve as a platform from which to build partnerships within the church and civil society, and engage other CIDSE member organisations. Participating agencies all contribute towards maintaining a policy officer, based at Broederlijk Delen (the Belgian member) to engage with the European Union (EU). The role allows for the building up of relationships with decision-makers in order to facilitate information exchange, the raising of concerns about human rights and development issues.
